Small appliances: factory-sealed equipment with 5 lbs of refrigerant or less, such as refrigerators, window units and PTACs. Recovery equipment rules, passive recovery and safe disposal.
Type II 40 questions
Medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances such as residential split systems, heat pumps and commercial refrigeration. Required evacuation levels, leak-repair rules, recovery technique and leak testing.

About the EPA 608 exam
Who needs EPA 608 certification?
Anyone who maintains, services or repairs stationary air-conditioning or refrigeration equipment in a way that could release refrigerant, from attaching gauges to opening a system, must be certified under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. So must anyone who disposes of equipment other than small appliances. Sellers also need to see proof of certification before selling you most refrigerants.
How is the exam structured?
Four sections of 25 multiple-choice questions each: Core, Type I (small appliances), Type II (medium-, high- and very high-pressure equipment) and Type III (low-pressure equipment). On the standard closed-book exam you need 18 of 25 correct (70%) in each section you take. Pass Core plus at least one type to be certified for that type; pass all four for Universal certification. Some organizations also offer Type I alone as a mail-in or online test, which needs 84% (21 of 25) and cannot count toward Universal.
Does the certification expire?
No. EPA 608 certification does not expire. Keep a copy of your certificate at your place of business.
Is this the official exam?
No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The real exam is given by EPA-approved certifying organizations, usually with a proctor. This site is not affiliated with EPA.
